Shawna, originally hailing from Nova Scotia, grew up as the daughter of a physical education teacher and learned from a young age that exercise is an effective tool in managing stress and weight while providing a sense of confidence and accomplishment. However, Shawna states that exercise is not the entirety of her wellbeing. After earning her nursing degree in 1993, Shawna settled in Bangor, Maine with her husband and four boys. Like many women, Shawna found that achieving balance in both work and home seemed unattainable and at times, life seemed like a never-ending treadmill of obligations, many of which lacked joy.
By happenstance, Shawna was introduced to Health Coaching and was drawn to the positive psychology, mindfulness training, and truly holistic behaviors required to initiate and sustain change. These methods deeply resonated in ways the sick/disease model never have.
Ultimately, Shawna believes that you deserve to be happy and fulfilled, and combines a holistic approach with medical education to provide clients custom action plans. It took me awhile to finally send Shawna a message to schedule a time to meet with her. Why? Because I was scared. Scared to face myself. Scared to stand up to my anxiety. I have always been afraid to step out of my comfort zone. What if I wasn’t good enough? What would people think? What if I failed. I don’t have time to be silly!
